“She is a slave,” I said. “Anything could be done with her.”
“By her master,” he said. “Not just anyone.”
“True,” I said. One did not have the right, for example, to kill or maim the slave of another, any more than any other domestic animal which might belong to someone else. In this sense the slave is accorded some protection from free persons who do not own her in virtue of certain general considerations of property law. The power of the master over the slave, on the other hand, is absolute. He can do whatever he wishes with her. She belongs to him, completely.
-Magicians of Gor, pg. 330
We see on many profiles, only allowed to be punished by my Master/Owner etc, if you read the following quotes below, you will see that this was not the norm in the books.
“Any free man may discipline an insolent or errant slave,’ I said, `even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her master, and that only if the master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation.’ In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their masters or their appointed agents.” Players of Gor, page 235
“You cannot punish me!? she cried. “You are not my Masters!”
“Any Free Person can punish an errant slave girl,” I said. “Surely you do not think that her behavior fails to be subject to supervision and correction as soon as she is out of her Master’s sight?” Magician of Gor, Page 225
So as you can see, in fact any Free may discipline/punish a slave, with or without a reason, even to the extent that they can kill or injure such slave, compensation being paid to their Owner only if they can be located within a specified amount of time and requests such compensation.
In reality, I do not suppose that the Goreans at a whim for no reason would decide to kill a slave or even injure. One would think that there would be a valid reason to, but the view point being put through is that the possibility is there, it should not be taken for granted within your roleplay that this in fact can happen, this may with this knowledge tailor your responses if you roleplay a slave to think a little more carefully before tempting a Free in to punishing you *smiles*.
Remember, as slaves you are a commodity, like cattle, on the same level as an animal, it is not in a Goreans interests to kill something that he has paid money on, nor is it in their interests to maim an animal/slave to an extent that they are not functional. However, like with any beast, should you prove yourself to be more trouble than your worth, or push too many buttons or even inadvertently commit a crime to warrant such wrath from a Free, you will, as would an animal be, be disposed of as seen fit.
I will now move on to specific punishments and methods, however remember, that punishments are only limited to your imagination, one can think up some wonderful ways to punish a slave, of course being on sl gives a differing environment as well, get to know your slave and what makes them tick, therefore enabling yourself to think up the best punishment for them also, one that will have the most effect and desired results *smiles sweetly*.
Here is a fast track listing of common/typical slave discipline and punishments, for those of you who are Free who want a quick glance sheet 🙂
Denial of a slave’s clothing
Denying her a name
Shaving a slave’s head
Depriving slaves of sex

Now to go on to fuller details:-
Slave bindings and/or punishments
Listed below is a list of slave bindings which may be used to bind a slave, for nothing more than her Owners enjoyment or as punishment. Also listed are the punishments issued to slaves in the book series.
Semi circular openings with a block, the top block swinging shut over the bottom block, hinged on the left, the block then secured with a metal bolt on a chain, thrust through the staple on the lower block, over the hasp, swung down from the upper block. Very effective to stop a running slave.
Explorers of Gor pg 68
A narrow eighteen inch strap, normally black, used for the binding of hands behind the back.
Guardsman of Gor pgs 237 ∓mp; 274
Consists of three pieces, usually two rounded pieces of soft felt, three to four inches in diameter, and the binding which usually consists of two or more turns of a dark, thick, folded cloth, or scarf, knotted behind the head. The blindfold is seldom used in the transportation of slaves, the hood is more commonly used for this purpose.
Rogue of Gor pg 201
Soft leather cuffs with locks and snaps; the snaps unlike the cuffs, require no key, by means of the snaps the girl may be secured by the locked cuffs, her hands fastened either behind her back, in front of her, or to her collar.
Slave Girl of Gor pg 297
handcuff type restraints used to restrain the wrists of slaves-usually metal
Tribesman of Gor pg 156
Made of metal, the girl is placed upright, then the rack locked on her. Wrists are placed behind her, in the adjustable wrists clamps, each on their vertical flat metal bar, which are screwed shut. Feet are shackled on a rotating metal platform. The branding rack rotates bringing the site be branded into view unencumbered.
Explorers of Gor pg 71 ∓mp; Savages of Gor pg 121
Both female and the selected male are hooded, they are not permitted to speak. The purpose is impregnation, this coupling is public with the masters and others of official or non official capacity present, to make any pertinent payments or determinations.
Dancer of Gor pg 175
Used to show slaves for sale at the house of Slavers and/or Slave Auction Houses, fastened to the roof of the portico, others in tiers of cages lining the interior walls of the portico.
Assassin of Gor pg 286 ∓mp; Fighting Slave of Gor pg 220
**Collar Sleeve: (collar stocking)**
They may be made of many different materials. In a cooler climate they are sometimes of velvet. In most cities they are not used.
Kajira of Gor pg 46
used to contain dung after it has been raked or collected, used as a slave punishment
Nomads of Gor pg 285
**Fetters (slave bracelets of Torvaldsland)**
Consist of curved, hinged bands of black iron, three quarters of an inch in width and a quarter inch in thickness. On one of each of the two curved pieces consituting a bracelet there is a welded ring; the two welded rings are joined by a single link, about an inch in width, counting both sides, each of which is about a quarter of an inch in diameter, and three inches long.
Marauders of Gor pg 46
Wrists are joined by about eighteen inches of chain and similarly for the ankles. Further each wrist is chained to the ankle. This arrangement, produces the “four chains.”
Captive of Gor pg 42
A device secured in place with by a broad mouth covering strap, with three smaller straps attached to it, one to secure the broad strap at the upper lip, another to secure it across the mouth, pulling it back between the teeth, and one to secure it at the chin. These straps are then pulled back tightly and fastened; the top strap above the ears, behind the back of the head, to the lower straps behind the back of the head. The heavy rolled leather wadding that is thrust back behind the teeth with the broad mouth covering strap, by design, expands thus securing it in place, packing the entire oral orifice.
Dancer of Gor pg 271
Indigenous to the city of Port Kar, where a slave who has been displeasing is bound naked and thrown into the canals of the city for urt feed.
Tribesmen of Gor pg 313
Parts of the hood; the leather ball, the strap attached at the front of it, and the belt, with its double loop, on the outside, held in place by the belt loops, at its opening. Some hoods are little more than sacks, of canvas or leather, with drawstrings. A small padlock, passes through two rings, the buckle ring and one of the small rings, sewn in the belt.
Mercenaries of Gor pg 75
This belt consisted of two major pieces; one was a rounded, fitted, curved bar like waistband, flattened at the ends; one end of this band, that on the right, standing behind the woman and looking forward, had a heavy semicircular ring, or staple, welded onto it; the other flattened end of the waistband, looking forward, had a slot in it which fitted over the staple; the other major portion of this belt consisted of a curved band of flat, shaped iron’ one end of this flat band was curved about, and closed about, the bar like waistband in the front; this produces a hinge; the flat, U-shaped strap of the iron swings on this hinge; on the other end of this flat band of the iron is a slot; it fits over the same staple as the slot in the flattened end of the left side of the bar like waistband.
The belt is then put in the woman in this fashion. The waistband is closed about her, the left side, its slot penetrated by the staple, over the right side; the flat U-shaped band of iron, contoured to female intimacies, is then swung up on its hinge between her thighs, where the slot on its end is penetrated by the staple, this keeping the part of the belt in place. The whole apparatus is then locked on her, the tongue of a padlock thrust through the staple, the lock then snapped shut.
Kajira of Gor pg 103, Dancer of Gor pg 299, Magicians of Gor pg 57 ∓mp; 293
A stout whip, with a long handle, which might be wielded with two hands, and five dangling, soft, wide lashing surfaces, each about a yard long.
Slave Girl of Gor pg 83, Kajira of Gor pg 83
Some fifteen feet in length. When used in leading, this amount of length would not be used, but would be coiled in the grasp of the master. The length is useful if the slave is expected to perform leash dances, is to be bound with the leash, or if, it doubled at the master’s end, it is to be used to train or discipline her.
Magicians of Gor pg 195, Kajira of Gor pg 336
Leather and metal; curved metal bars rounded about a quarter of an inch in diameter, fitted to individual girl by ratchet and pawl arraignment, locks behind neck, cannot be removed, leaving slaves hands free for duties.
Beasts of Gor pgs 347-348
made of wood or bone, drilled in 3 places
1 hole at neck
1 hole at each end
strap knotted about wrist, passed through one end of hole (usually the left first), through the hole at the neck, wrapped twice about the neck, back through the hole at the neck, brought through the end hole on the right and tied about the wrist.
Beasts of Gor pgs 196-197
There are three separate irons, each a tiny letter not more than an a quarter of an inch high, they mark a liar, thief, and traitress.
Captive of Gor pg 310
Made from wood, with wheels, levers, gears, pinions, joints, braces, fitted sliding boards, notches and lock points, thus giving it the ability to be adjusted into a variety of positions. The pleasure rack has an aesthetic value. It serves two major purposes:
1) the exhibiting and displaying of it’s helpless prisoner;
2) to hold the female in any position one pleases.
Outlaw of Gor pg 199, Rogue of Gor pgs 27-28
Slave is pulled to the post, close to it and facing it. The heavy belt, with the ring on it, through which the loose post strap passed, that strap looping the post and threaded through the belt ring, was put about the belly, and buckled shut, tightly, behind the small of the back. Able to move easily about the post but, given the post strap, and the belt ring, can not be further than six inches from it.
Kajira of Gor pg 290
Leather, long, some two feet in length.
Fighting Slave of Gor pg 68
1) dominate the slave making her feel her womanhood, and it’s relationship to the male, and then, her belly ready, aching, vulnerably aflame, helplessly stirred, you send her packing;
2) whip the girl, then fling her to the ground, thrust her about, let her feel the side of a foot, such things, and then when wished, kneel her, her head to the ground, and used her.
Magicians of Gor pg 329
Ten inches of chain separated the ankles; the chain was fastened on them by means of two padlocks.
Kajira of Gor pg 244
About four feet long and three feet wide, with a depth of perhaps eighteen inches. It was of steel and opened from the top. In the lid, at each, there was a circle, about five inches in diameter, of penny-sized holes. It was locked shut, secured by two flat, steel bars, perpendicular to its long axis, padlocked, in front, in place.
Captive of Gor pgs 313-314, Kajira of Gor pg 148
Rather like the tarn goad, except that it is designed to be used as an instrument for the control of human beings rather than tarns.Unlike the tarn goad which has a simple on-off switch in the handle, the slave goad works with both a switch and a dial, and the intensity of the charge administered can be varied from an infliction which is only distinctly unpleasant to one which is instantly lethal. The slave goad, unknown in most Gorean cities, is almost never used except by professional slavers, probably because of the great expense involved.
Assassin of Gor pgs 84-85
Consists of two rings, one for a wrist, the other for ankle, joined by about seven inches of chain. In a right handed girl, it locks on the right wrist and left ankle. When a girl kneels, in any of the traditional positions of the Gorean woman, either slave or free, it is not uncomfortable.
Nomads of Gor pgs 154-155
a leather hood having no opening for eyes, mouth or ears, covers a slaves whole head, usually has a gag attachment.
Slave Girl of Gor pg 146
Cages are not pleasant, measures 4 paces by 4 paces, can house up to 20 girls within.
Marauders of Gor pg 12
Made of leather, normally pulled up, over the head, and laced shut. Confinement in the slave sack is, incidentally, a familiar form of light punishment for a girl.
Fighting Slave of Gor pg 244, Kajira of Gor pg 273
A girl is stripped, each ankle bound widely apart to stakes, her wrists also bound widely apart to stakes, her thigh is cut and blood is smeared on her belly to draw the animal. This is done when there is no longer a use for a girl.
Hunters of Gor pgs 230-231, Captive of Gor pgs 230-231
An ornately barred, low ceiling cage, about five feet high, rather roomy. The girl in the stimulation cage is not permitted to look into the eyes of a male, not even a male slave. This is designed to make her extremely conscience of males. Accoutrements include: brushes, perfumes, cosmetics, slave jewelry, heavy necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and bangles. There is no clothing. There are cushions, bowls of copper, and lamps of brass. There are surfaces of varying textures: deep piled rug, satins, silk, coarsely woven cloths, brocades, rep cloth, a tiled corner, sleen pelt, cloths woven of strung beads, cloaks of leather and mats of reed. The point is to bring the senses to life.
Tribesmen of Gor pg 24
Often used on a girl when she is guilty of minor indiscretions or tiny misdemeanour’s. It is thought a fitting instrument for encouraging a beauty to be more careful or zealous in her service.
Kajira of Gor pg 85
**Turian Slave Bar**
Metal bar, with a collar at each end and, behind the collar, manacles which fasten the prisoner’s hands behind his neck.
Nomads of Gor pg 193
Heavy coil, laced with wire and flecks of iron. Used primarily on male slaves/captives.
Marauders of Gor pg 105, Beasts of Gor pgs 157 ∓mp; 161
Consists of a stout branch, about two inches thick, some five feet in length, holes drilled in the center and near the extremities. Fits behind the girl’s neck, a long simple thong of rawhide fastens the girl in place. Smaller yokes can be fashioned to secure a slave for other purposes, such as enjoyment in the furs. An effective way of securing a slave.
Savages of Gor pgs 281-282, Beasts of Gor pgs 196-197
Normally a pair of hinged planks, with matched semi circular openings in the planks. The head and wrists are aligned with the openings, the planks then closed are either tied or locked shut. This stock yoke is sometimes placed on a girl while she is on her back. If the planks are sufficiently wide enough, the girl is unable to see the actions of the Master, she can only feel it.
Savages of Gor pg 282-283
**How is a slave commonly punished the first time she runs away?**
“The penalty for attempted flight by a slave girl, for the first offence, is commonly a severe beating. The girl is, so to speak, permitted that mistake, once. If she should attempt to escape again, the master’s patience is usually less willing to be presumed upon. It is not uncommon to hamstring her. This makes her worthless, but is thought to provide an excellent lesson for other girls.” –Hunters of Gor, page 72
Cut off her feet, and her nose and ears, and blind her in one eye—then release her to live as she can among the wagons.
Nomads of Gor, pg 167
The punishment of a runaway slave is often grievous, sometimes culminating in death.
Nomads of Gor, pg 169
a punishment not otherwise described, however the earth translation is a beating, especially with a stick or cudgel. The beating may be specifically to the soles of the feet.
Book 25: Magicians of Gor, page 445
In this discipline the female is forbidden human speech. She is also forbidden human posture, in the sense that she is not allowed to rise to her feet. Her locomotion, unless commanded to roll, or put under similar commands, suitable for a pet, will be on all fours. Her food will be thrown to her, or put in pans on the ground. In either case, she must feed without the use of her hands. She may also, of course, be fed by hand, but, again, will not be permitted to touch the food with her hands. She may be taught tricks. Sometimes these are taught as functions of arbitrary sounds, so that she must learn them as any animal might, without the benefit of an earlier understanding of the word used. If she is slow to learn, of course, she is punished, as would be any other animal. When used, too, it will commonly be in the modality of the she-quadrupled. This discipline is often used as a punishment, but it may figure in the training of a new girl. It helps her to understand what she now is, an animal totally subject to her master.
pp 215-216 Mercenaries of Gor
**Punishment of the Oar **
“In this punishment, the girl clothed or unclothed, is bound tightly to an oar, hands behind her, her head down, toward the blade. When the oar lifts from the water she gasps for breath, only in another moment to be submerged again. A recalcitrant girl may be kept on the oar for hours. There is also, however, some danger in this, for sea sleen and the white sharks of the north occasionally attempt to tear such a girl from the oar. When food is low, it is not unknown for the men of Torvaldsland to use a bond-maid, if one is available on the ship, for bait in such a manner. The least pleasing girl is always used. This practice, of course, encourages bond-maids to vie vigorously to please their Masters. An Ahn on the oar is usually more than sufficient to make the coldest and proudest of females an obedient, eager-to-please bond-maid. It is regarded as second only to the five-lash Gorean slave whip, used also in the south, and what among the men of Torvaldsland is called the whip of the furs, in which the master, with his body, incontrovertibly teaches the girl her slavery.”
~Marauders of Gor, page 66 ~
There were also penalty brands, such as for a liar, thief and traitress.
Second batch of BTB Quotes if you can find time 🙂
BTB Quotes on punishments ~~
“Blood ran from my mouth; other blood I swallowed. My vision cleared; I could not believe the pounding of my heart. I had been cuffed. I knelt, terrified. At that time I did not realize how light had been my discipline considering the gravity of my offense. I had both spoken without permission, and broken position without permission. Most simply, I had been displeasing to a free man.”
~Slave Girl of Gor, page 34~
“In Ar, as on Gor generally, a slave, on threat of torture and impalement, must endure whatever abuse a free person cares to inflict on him.”
~Assassins of Gor, page 282, 283~
“Punishment for having to repeat a command is always at the option of the master. For example, a command might not be clearly heard, or might not be clear in itself, or might appear inconsistent with the master’s presumed intentions. Whether punishment is in order or not is then a matter for judgment on the master’s part.”
~Magicians of Gor, page 198~
“Strip,” he said.
“There are others present,” she protested.
His right hand, in a backhand blow, lashed forth, fierce and powerful, striking her from her knees to her side on the tiles. She rose to her hands and knees and, blood at her mouth, regarded him, disbelievingly.
“Must a command be repeated?” he inquired.
Swiftly she tore away the slave tunic, stripping herself.”
~Guardsmen of Gor, page 257~
“Where you ever happy with a master?” I asked acidly.
“Oh yes,” said Ute. Her eyes shone.
I looked at her disgustedly. “What happened?” I asked.
She looked down. “I tried to bend him to my will,” she said. “He sold me.”
~Captive of Gor, page 83~
“The leash, not uncommonly, can cause a woman to sexually blossom. This is presumably a function of such things as its actual restraint, which is quite real; its message to her that she is an animal, a slave; and its making clear to her, by a device, such as a bracelet, a brand or collar, what is the order of nature, who it is who controls her and who it is whom she must obey, who is the slave and who is the master. A leash, even apart from questions of training, of course, can have powerful emotional impact on a girl. It is a very useful way of convincing a girl that she is slave; similarly it can always serve as an effective reminder. Some girls do not seem to believe they are slaves until they have been leashed. But after that, and after having been put through “leash paces,” there is seldom any doubt in their mind. Some girls beg to be leashed, sometimes crawling to their masters, their leash held between their small, fine teeth. Most masters use the leash at one time or another. A Gorean saying has it that a leashed slave is a hot slave.”
~Fighting Slave of Gor, page 366~
“Master,” said the girl.
“Yes,” I said.
“You need not have struck me, earlier this afternoon,” she said. “But I suppose that you are the judge of that, for you are the Master,” she added, airily.
I looked at her.
“Surely one needs a reason for striking a slave,” she said.
“No,” I said.
“I see,” she said, putting her head down. She trembled.
“Come here,” I said. “Kneel before me, back on your heels.”
She did so, looking at me. “Master?” she asked.
Suddenly I struck her, a fierce blow which flung her, mouth bloodied, to her side in the dirt.
I stood up. “Do you see?” I asked.
“Yes, Master,” she whispered, looking up at me, horrified.
“Now kneel before me and kiss my feet,” I said, “and thank me for having struck you.”
Tremblingly, she crawled to me, and knelt before me. She put her head down. I felt her lips on my feet. “Thank you for having struck me, Master” she whispered. She looked up at me.
“Do you now understand that you are a slave?” I asked.
“Yes, Master,” she said.
“Do you still think that a Master requires a reason to strike you?” I asked.
“No, Master,” she said.
“And why is that?” I asked.
“Because I am a slave,” she said.”
~Explorers of Gor, page 295~
“Excellent slaves are seldom beaten, for there is little, if any, reason to do so. To be sure, such a girl, particularly a love slave, occasionally desires to feel the stroke of the lash, wanting to feel pain at the hands of a beloved master, wanting to be whipped by him because she loves him, in this way symbolizing to herself her relationship to him, that of slave to master, her acceptance of that relationship, and her rejoicing in it.”
~Magicians of Gor, Page 124~
“You cannot punish me!” she cried. “You are not my Masters!”
“Any Free Person can punish an errant slave girl,” I said. “Surely you do not think that her behavior fails to be subject to supervision and correction as soon as she is out of her Master’s sight?”
~Magician of Gor, page 225~
“The discipline of a slave,” I said, “may be attended to by any Free Person, otherwise she might do much what she wished, provided only her Master did not learn of it.” The legal principle is clear, and has been upheld in several courts, in several cities, including Ar. ”
~Magicians of Gor, Page 122~
“Any Free Man may discipline an insolent or errant slave,” I said, “even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her Master, and that only if the Master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation.” In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their Masters or their appointed agents.”
~Players of Gor, Page 235~
“New slaves are often treated with great harshness. It helps them learn quickly that they are slaves. Later, when the girl is well trained and her services become perfections she may be treated more leniently, even lovingly, like a dog.”
~Dancer of Gor, page 90 & 91~
“And then, suddenly, she screamed, caught fully, helplessly, in the blurred, whistling slash of the five-stranded Gorean slave whip.
Ten strokes did I give her.
Then she hung weeping, shuddering, at the ring. “How can you whip me?” she asked. “You are a man of Earth.” I went to her and, by the hair, jerked back her head, and she cried out with pain. “Is this the touch of a man of Earth?” I asked.
“No,” she said, frightened.
“Too,” I said, whispering in her ear, “you are a new slave who has been brought recently to my house.”
“No,” she begged. “No!”
Sometimes a girl is whipped when she is first brought into a new house. It is regarded, in some cities, including Victoria, as a way of making clear to her that the house in which she now finds herself is a house in which she is a slave.”
~Rogue of Gor, pages 128 – 130~
”A master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, it being beneath him. He of course would not approved had one of the girls been maimed, blinded or disfigured.”
~Nomads of Gor, page 138~
”About her neck was a thick metal collar to which a heavy iron chain had been fastened, the chain itself was attached to a large iron ring placed in the floor. I supposed she was being disciplined.”
~Nomads of Gor, page 219~
One poor girl slept naked…..About her neck was a thick metal collar to which a heavy iron chain had been fastened; the chain itself was attached to a large iron ring placed in the floor. I supposed she was being disciplined.
Nomads of Gor, pg 219
”What do you think should be her punishment?” asked Callimachus of me.
“If she is guilty,” I said, “whatever you wish, as she is a slave.” This was in full accord with Gorean law. Indeed, anything, for whatever reason, or without a reason, may be done to a slave.”
~Guardsman of Gor, page 115~
pulling her toward a sleen cage mounted low on a cart near the wagon, into which, still braceleted, he thrust her, then closing the door, locking it.
Nomads of GOR, pg 169
”Discipline?” breathed the girl.
“Yes,” said Mira, “the slave girl is subject to discipline and punishment. She is owned, like a sleen or tarsk is owned. She is owned, literally owned. You must understand that in its full sense. Accordingly, anything may be done with her that the master wishes. She may even be slain, if the master wishes.”
“Then the slave girl is totally helpless,” said the girl. “she is totally at the mercy of the Master.”
“Yes,” said Mira.”
~Blood Brothers of Gor, page 296~
“Sometimes,” said he, “to discipline a bond-maid, she is hurled naked among the thralls.”
~Marauders of Gor, page 89~
“We carried a torch to the ice shed. We opened the heavy door, lined with leather, and lifted the torch, closing the door behind us.
In the light of the torch we saw Hilda. We approached more closely.
She lay on her side, in misery, across great blocks of ice; she could lift her head and shoulders no more than six inches from the ice; she could draw her ankles toward her body no more than six inches; small chips of wood, in which the ice is packed, clung about her body; she was bound, hand and foot, her wrists behind her, her ankles crossed and tied. Two ropes prohibited her from struggling to either a sitting or kneeling position, one running from her right ankle across the ice to a ring in the side of the shed, the other running, from her throat across the ice to a similar ring on the other side of the shed.
“Please,” she wept.
Her teeth chattered; her lips were blue.
She lay before us, on her back.
“Please,” she wept, piteously, “I beg to be permitted to run to the furs of Ivar Forkbeard.”
~Marauders of Gor, page 132~
“Would you have touched her?” asked the Forkbeard.
“Yes, my Jarl,” whispered the young man.
“You see!” cried Ottar. “Let Red Hair strike!”
I smiled. “Let him be whipped instead,” I said.
“No!” cried Ottar.
“Let it be as Red Hair suggests,” said the Forkbeard. He then looked at the thrall. “Run to the whipping post,” he said. “Beg the first free rnan who passes to beat you.”
Yes, my Jarl,” he said.
He would be stripped and bound, wrists over his head, to the post at the bosk shed
“Fifty strokes,” said the Forkbeard.
“Yes, my Jarl,” said the young man
“The lash,” said the Forkbeard, “will be the snake.”
His punishment would be heavy indeed. The snake is a single-bladed whip, weighted, of braided leather, eight feet long and about a half an inch to an inch thick. It is capable of lifting the flesh from a man´s back. Sometimes it is set with tiny particles of metal. It was not impossible that he would die under its blows. The snake is to be distinguished from the much more common Gorean slave whip, with its five broad striking surfaces. The latter whip, commonly used on females, punishes terribly; it has, however, the advantage of not marking the victim. No one is much concerned, of course, with whether or not a thrall is marked . A girl with an unmarked back, commonly, will bring a much higher price than a comparable wench, if her back be muchly scarred. Men commonly relish a smooth female, except for the brand scar.”
~Marauders of Gor, page 105~
Penalty Brand Quote ~
“Four men held me, naked, near the brazier. I could feel the heat blazing from the canister. The sky was very blue, the clouds were white.
“Please, no!” I wept.
I saw Rask, with a heave glove, draw forth one of the irons from the fire. It reminated in a tiny letter, not more that a quarter of an inch high. The letter was white hot. “This is a penalty brand,” he said. “It marks you as a liar.”
“Please, Master!” I wept.
“I no longer have patience with you,” he said. “Be marked as what you are.”
I screamed uncontrollably as he pressed in the iron, holding it firmly into my leg. Then, after some two to four Ihn, he removed it. I could not stop screaming with pain. I smelled the odor of burned flesh, my own. I began to whimper. I could not breathe. I gasped for breath. Still the men held me.
“This penalty brand,” said Rask of Treve, lifting another iron from the brazier, again with a tiny letter at its glowing termination, “marks you also as what you are, as a thief.”
“Please, no, Master!” I wept.
I could not move a muscle of my left leg. It might as well have been locked in a vise. It must wait for the iron.
I screamed again, uncontrollably. I had been branded as a thief.
“This third iron,” said Rask of Treve, “is, too, a penalty iron. I mark you with this not for myself, but for Ute.”
Through raging tears I saw, white hot, the tiny letter.
“It marks you as a traitress,” said Rask of Treve. He looked at me, with fury. ‘Be marked as a traitress,’ he said. Then he pressed the third iron into my flesh. As it entered my flesh, biting and searing, I saw Ute watching, her face betraying no emotion. I screamed, and wept, and screamed.
Still the men did not release me.
Rask of Treve lifted the last iron from the fire. It was much larger, the letter at its termination some one and a half inches high. It, too, was white hot. I knew the brand. I had seen it on Ena’s thigh. It was the mark of Treve. Rask of Treve decided that my flesh should bear that mark.
“No, Master, please!” I begged him.
“Yes, Worthless Slave,” he said, “you will wear in your flesh the mark of the city of Treve.”
“Please,” I begged.
“When men ask you,” said he, “who it was that marked you as a liar and a thief, and traitress, point to this brand, and say, I was marked by one of Treve, who was displeased with me.”

Punishment of the Oar ~~
“Put her to the oar,” had said the Forkbeard.
Hilda, clothed, had been roped, hand and foot, and body, on her back, head down, to one of the nineteen-foot oars.
“You cannot do this to me,” she cried.
Then, to her misery, she felt the oar move. “I am a free woman!” she cried.
Then, like any bond-maid, she found herself plunged beneath the cold green surface of Thassa.
The oar lifted.
“I am the daughter of Thorgard of Scagnar!” she cried, spitting water, half blinded.
Then the oar dipped again. When it pulled her next from the water, she was clearly terrified. She had swallowed water. She had learned what any bond-maid swiftly learns, that one must apply oneself, and be rational, if one will survive on the oar. One must follow its rhythm, and, as soon as the surface is broken, expel air and take a deep breath. In this fashion a girl may live on the oar.
For a time the Forkbeard watched her, leaning on hi elbows, on the rail, but then he left the rail.
He did, however, have Gorm watch her, with a spear. Twice in the afternoon Gorm struck away sea sleen from the girl’s body. Once he thrust away one of the white sharks of the northern waters, The second of the sea sleen it had been which, with its sharp teeth, making a strike, but falling short, had torn away her green velvet gown on the right side from the hip to the hemline; a long strip of it, like a ribbon, was in its teeth as it darted away.
She had not been on the oar for half an Ahn when she had begun to beg her release; a few Ehn later, she had be-gun to beg to heel the Forkbeard.
But it was not until evening that the oar lifted, and she was released. She was fed hot broths and fettered again to the mast.”
